Microsoft Excel World Championship 2025 India Chapter Rules (hereinafter referred to as the “Rules”) are effective from July 1, 2025. All previous rules are cancelled, null and void.


Please read these Competition Rules carefully. You should review all our legal documents before participating in any Competition. If you do not accept these Rules or any of our legal documents, do not use the Website or participate in any Competition.


1. The Event

Microsoft Excel World Championship 2025 India Chapter (hereinafter – MEWC 2025 India) is an esports tournament that is based in Microsoft Excel. The tournament has a series of Qualification Rounds followed by the LAN finals in Chennai, India.

The Event is organized by SkyEsports in collaboration with the Financial Modeling World Cup (hereinafter – FMWC).

2. The Participants

MEWC 2025 India is open to any participant regardless of age, gender, race, place of living, or any other limiting factor.

3. MEWC 2025: Cases

Each round of the Competition will provide one Case consisting of a range of problem-solving questions solvable with Microsoft Excel.

Each Case will include several Questions that the Participants will have to provide answers for.

The complexity of the Questions will vary, with more complex questions awarding more points if answered correctly.

All the Questions will be formulated in such a way as to provide fully automated objective grading.

It is expected that the Question format will be “Number type-in” or “Text type-in”. The organizers reserve an option to use other Question formats if deemed necessary.

No answers will be in the form of an essay.

The Cases will be varied in topics; however, all Cases will be solvable by a general MS Excel user. Solving the Cases will require knowledge of Excel functions, data management skills and logical thinking. The Cases will test participant’s abilities to use MS Excel techniques to solve out-of-the-box problems. The Cases will not require specific knowledge of finance, engineering, statistics or other scientific disciplines.

The Cases will be structured in such a way that the users of older versions of MS Excel (2010 and up) should be able to complete them. However, newer versions of MS Excel might provide faster ways to solve the Cases.

In order to correctly solve the Cases, Participants will need to answer the Questions, produce and submit their files.

Model formatting and style will not be judged.

Sample Cases are available on the FMWC website free of charge.

4. MEWC Structure and Sequence of Rounds

The following competitions organized by FMWC constitute the qualifying path to winning MEWC 2025 India:

MEWC India Online Qualification Rounds (July 30, Aug 15, Aug 21)

Finals (Sept 4, 2025).

5. MEWC India Qualification Rounds

Participants will receive access to the Case in their registered email between 6:00 PM and 6:15 PM and will have to submit their answers before 6.45 PM IST. However, no matter the starting time, each participant will have a 30-minute limit to complete everything.

Participation in the MEWC India Qualification Rounds is free of charge.

The registration for the Qualifiers closes 3 days before the start of each Qualifier.

The organizers reserve the right to change the dates at their sole discretion (to accommodate for holidays or other events).

The players will solve 1 game Case in an Excel Esports format in each round.

FMWC may change the format at any time at their sole discretion.

The organizers expect to announce the full results of each Round in a few days after the end of the rounds.

Awards:

The top 4 players of each Qualifier will qualify for the Semi Finals.

A total of 6 spots in the MEWC 2025 India Finals will be awarded to the winners of the semi-finals stage.

6. In-Person Finals

The In-Person Finals will be held on Thursday, September 4, 2025, at the Chennai, India.

The In-Person Finals will consist of:

Two Semi-final Games featuring 6 players each. The top 3 from each semi-final will qualify for the Finals Game.

Finals Game featuring 6 players qualified from the semi-finals, who will compete for the Indian Champion title and a free trip to represent India at the MEWC 2025 Finals in Las Vegas in December.

The 6 players winning their matches at the semi-finals round will be invited to take part in the Finals.

These 6 players will take part in the Finals – the ultimate finals of MEWC 2025 India Chapter.

The final match will be in all vs all format, but the game will last 40 minutes, when the players will decide the medal split between themselves,

The format of the final matches might change based on the organizers’ decision.

7. Points System

The total number of points available for correctly solving the entire Case at each round – 1,000 regular points and 250 bonus points per case. Additional points could be introduced by the organizers with the goal of giving extra interest to the competition (e.g., an extra 100 points for answering an additional extra-hard question, specified separately).

At the end of any round, the participants will have to upload their models on the testing platform. If this is not done upon completion of the participant’s work, the participant’s results might be annulled.


8. Tie-breakers

In the event that 2 (two) or more Participants have an equal number of points in a round, in determining the higher-ranked Participant, the following is taken into consideration:

Model uploaded: The Participant who has not uploaded their Excel model within the 30-minute timeframe will be ranked lower than any other participant who has uploaded the model.

More Time Saved: The Participant with the lowest amount of Time spent on solving the Case wins. In case the participants are still tied, then

Best Current Form: The Participant with the highest score in the most recent Round of the competition.

If the most recent Round results are identical, then the Participant with the best result in the second-to-the-last round will be taken into consideration.

If the results are still identical, then the previous Round results shall be evaluated in a similar fashion going backward. In an extremely unlikely case when the participants are still tied, then the player who registered for the competition first wins the tie.

Tie-breakers will be calculated when they affect the prize money recipients or players who qualify for the seats in the future rounds of the competition.

9. Fair Play

Participants should compete ethically, avoiding any form of cheating or manipulation.

Except for the team competitions, the participants should only use their own skills and abilities to complete the Cases.

Usage of multiple accounts at FMWC, exchange of information with other participants during the rounds, and trying to gain early access to cases by any technical means is considered to be a severe violation of the Fair Play principles and is prohibited.

For clarity, the use of AI (Copilot and other engines), pre-created Lambda formulas, VBA code, and other similar means of tech-related performance enhancement is allowed to the players.

Violations of the Fair Play rules will lead to disqualification of the guilty players. In case of disqualification, no participation fee refunds will be provided.

10. Changes in the Rules

The Organizers have the right to change these Rules at their sole discretion.
